4 ways to keep locs moisturized

As you know, natural hair needs moisture to protect and grow. And even with protective styles, it's very important to give them the moisture they need. If your locs are dry, they are fragile and susceptible to damage. You need to implement a healthy hair care routine for your protective styles to keep your protective styles well moisturized.

1. Wash Your Locs

The best way to keep locs moisturized is by washing them. When cleaning locs, you need to use a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any product build-up, oil, dead skin cells, dirt, or pollutants that are stuck in the locs. Hair is porous, meaning it will only allow a limited amount of water and products in the hair strands. If your hair is full of gunk, it is unable to adequately take and keep moisture. Locs are left dry and fragile. Clean locs provide a great canvas for optimum absorption and moisture retention.

But don’t overwash your locs. Washing locs too often can cause dryness as the shampoo will strip the locs dry.

2. Water-based moisturizers

You can boost water-based moisture levels by choosing hair products made with natural ingredients. Coconut oil for example, has effective properties to bring moisture to your hair. Coconut oil has the ability to condition hair, prevent damage and lock in moisture.

3. Use vegetable oils

Sebum is the natural oil produced by the scalp and is essential for healthy, hydrated hair. When you wear your locs, sebum has a hard time moving down each strand to nourish, lubricate and retain moisture. Using oils is beneficial to implement into your routine. They should be used on your hair to retain moisture and prevent dryness. Opt for a jojoba, avocado or argan oil based routine.

4. Go for satin

Rubbing your hair against materials like cotton, for example, can cause a lot of friction and breakage, especially when you sleep. If you use cotton pillowcases, they will absorb moisture and cause your hair to dry out. Instead, opt for a silk or satin pillowcase, cap or scarf - it's ideal for protecting the hair and retaining moisture in the hair !

Retaining moisture is the best way to keep and grow strong, healthy hair. Focusing on a healthy and varied diet, providing all the nutrients you need is also a guaranteed way to keep your hair hydrated.
